Severe hearing loss is relatively common in Sierra Leone, because of the high fevers that babies suffer due to malaria and other diseases. Sr. Amala Santhiyagu of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, run a school for the hearing impaired in Makeni Town, Sierra Leone. When the school’s main funding source was exhausted in December, 2024, Sr. Amala was distraught, not knowing how she could feed her 93 boarding and 57 walk-in students. On December 31, 2024, Africa Surgery made a one-time donation to the School. We hope to be able to make a similar donation in December 2025. On January 25, 2025, we presented the school with over forty pairs of hearing aids and lots of extra batteries, all donated to Africa Surgery by the Starkey Hearing Foundation in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
