Seeing Beyond Circumstances
At just four years old, Mariama Sumaila lost her vision. Many would have assumed her opportunities had ended there—but Mariama refused to let blindness define her future.
Today, at 33, she has earned a college degree in education and teaches young children at a government primary school. Although she is not yet receiving a salary, she continues to teach faithfully in the hope of becoming a certified government teacher, a milestone that would provide her with a modest but dependable income.
Mariama’s husband is also blind. He teaches at a private school, where his pay is irregular and often delayed. Together they are raising two young daughters, relying on the kindness of family and friends to make ends meet.
When Africa Surgery visited the family to deliver a much-needed bag of rice, we discovered another hardship. Mice had destroyed most of Mariama’s clothing, leaving her with very little.
Thanks to the generosity of parishioners from Assumption Church in Morristown, New Jersey, we were able to provide Mariama with donated clothing and dresses, along with a hard-shell luggage set that arrived in our most recent shipping container. What might seem like ordinary items became extraordinary gifts for a family with so little.
This month, Africa Surgery will also help pay half the rent on the family’s new home—a move that will provide them with something many of us take for granted: an indoor toilet and safer living conditions.
Mariama’s story reminds us that our mission extends beyond surgery. Sometimes helping someone heal means providing dignity, stability, and encouragement when life feels overwhelming.
